However, a small rag-t ag t eam of programmers - spread across t he United States but connected via the online networks - have joined together to create some hot new Amiga games.

Called Dark Unicorn Productions, they seem to be using t he Doom approach in promoting their software: Release a basic edihon of the game online, and sell a much-enhanced version as commercial software. This takes the old Artillery program, pioneered on text-only display terminals in the late s, and blasts it into the mid-'90s with colour terrain, rocking music by Sidewinder Eric Gieseke , and an amazing variety of weapons. A m o s t h e i n o u s o f crimes in the eyes of any true Amiga fanatic but I opened my wallet willin- gly and splashed out nearly two grand for what is basically a machine that's impractical in many respects, based on ancient technology and will probably be redundant in the next ve years. Forget all the hype that a PC will last forever, that irs future proof - it won't and isn't, no comput er can be.

Mot herboard designs change and become impractical t o upgrade without ripping the whole machine apart and starting from scratch. The buying decision was one of forced com- promise. You're not going to nd the stan- dard of genlocking on a PC that you'd nd on the Amiga, or even some of the 'multimedia' capabilit ies of a Shor t of Ami ga International committing commercial suicide and licensing their technology t o third-party manufacturers, the likes of Video Toaster are pipe dreams for PC owners.

So why did I do it? Simple - I want ed a machine t hat is guarant eed of a f ut ure f or those ve years, that has denite and assured support f rom a large base of sof t ware and hardware manufacturers and from a company that won' t suddenly tall into bankruptcy and leave me wondering what the hell happened.

For all its bugbears and horrendous operating inadequacies, that international support and the PC' s sheer power are vital ticks on my buying list. The Amiga, as we know it, has that kind of support but on a far smaller scale. There's a hell of a lot of respect tor the machine - tar more so t han t he PC. People will act ually argue ercely and passionately about its mer- its, whereas a PC owner will quit e happily admit to their machine being a donkey with a speedy Intel inside, but smile at the fact their investment is guaranteed of a future in t he short to mid term.

Many manufacturers throughout the Amiga's 'annus horriblus' that was '94, have by and large stood by the machine and continued to develop f or it. The Cyberst orm card. Lighlwave Release 4, and Photogenics are just some of t he high calibre products that have either arrived or are on t heir way to a vendor near you. So what of the Amiga's future if Pleasance and Co. Two years. Two long years in development. It's a lengthy period of time in technological terms, The next generation of Amigas is a mere blip on the consciousness of the computer world. Talking to certain Amiga developers, one of their main concerns is the lack of new technol- ogy surfacing in Me next f ew months, David Pleasance understandably seems happy t o rely on existing hardware and third-party sup- port - it would seem insane to cut Off existing Amiga owners at the moment by producing a non-downwardly compatible system.

But the fear remains that two years is simply going to be too long for punters who want power in their machines right now. The question every technophile's lips at the moment is: Could Amiga International sur- vive the next 24 months? It's my hope that they Could. The actual driving lessons were OK, after al. Great fun. The horrors started when I realised I had to wade through the highway code book in prepara- tion for the examiner's inevitable quesbons on those obscure road signs.

I would put the interest level of reading the highway code book on an equal footing with having t o read a phone book f rom a mile away using a telescope, while at the sarne time having to turn the pages by waiting for a bus to arrive to take you to the phone book and then back to the telescope.
