A m o s t h e i n o u s o f crimes in the eyes of any true Amiga fanatic but I opened my wallet willin- gly and splashed out nearly two grand for what is basically a machine that's impractical in many respects, based on ancient technology and will probably be redundant in the next ve years. Forget all the hype that a PC will last forever, that irs future proof - it won't and isn't, no comput er can be.
Mot herboard designs change and become impractical t o upgrade without ripping the whole machine apart and starting from scratch. The buying decision was one of forced com- promise. You're not going to nd the stan- dard of genlocking on a PC that you'd nd on the Amiga, or even some of the 'multimedia' capabilit ies of a Shor t of Ami ga International committing commercial suicide and licensing their technology t o third-party manufacturers, the likes of Video Toaster are pipe dreams for PC owners.
So why did I do it? Simple - I want ed a machine t hat is guarant eed of a f ut ure f or those ve years, that has denite and assured support f rom a large base of sof t ware and hardware manufacturers and from a company that won' t suddenly tall into bankruptcy and leave me wondering what the hell happened.
For all its bugbears and horrendous operating inadequacies, that international support and the PC' s sheer power are vital ticks on my buying list. The Amiga, as we know it, has that kind of support but on a far smaller scale. There's a hell of a lot of respect tor the machine - tar more so t han t he PC. People will act ually argue ercely and passionately about its mer- its, whereas a PC owner will quit e happily admit to their machine being a donkey with a speedy Intel inside, but smile at the fact their investment is guaranteed of a future in t he short to mid term.
